RECYCLING CENTRES ESTABLISHED UNDER SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CDL PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN RECYCLING BOTH DEPOSIT AND KERBSIDE RECYCLED COMMODITIES
Container Deposit Legislation is the responsible tool for South Australia having recovery rates for beverage containers far in excess of those achieved in other States.
Non CDL containers processed by Recycling Centres Container Deposit Legislation is not the only tool for recycling in South Australia. All Metropolitan Councils operate kerbisde collection systems which as well as accepting those value added commodities, also accept commodities such as, plastic containers, plastic milk containers, steel cans, paper and cardboard, deposit and non deposit glass which includes wine and food containers and liquidpaperboard milk and juice containers.
Added to the above some recycling centres provide drop off facilities for those same commodities as collected through the kerbside collection system, thus providing consumers with the benefit of one stop recycling with cash benefits.
Cash is also paid at recycling centres for car batteries, ferrous and non ferrous metals.
The chart on the following page shows the tonnages of materials returned to recycling centres as well as those returned via kerbside collection systems. These figures relate to tonnages returned and processed by these centres and show that in excess of 109,000 tonnes were recycled in 1997. Current figures are unavailable.
